Sequined Loxicha Purse

$30.00

Sequined purse made by Zapotec political prisoners from Loxicha, Oaxaca, in Mexico.

The twelve Loxichas were imprisoned on September 25, 1996, in the context of ex-president Ernesto Zedillo's low-intensity war against organized indigenous communities. They charged with being members of an armed organization. They deny the charges. They report, "we were cruelly tortured both physically and psychologically at the time of our arrest and forced to sign blank pages."

The Loxicha political prisoners are:

C. Agustín Luna Valencia
C. Urbano Ruiz Cruz
C. Álvaro Sebastián Ramírez
C. Justino Hernández José
C. Cirilo Ambrosio Antonio
C. Mario Ambrosio Martínez
C. Fortino Enríquez Hernández
C. Ricardo Martínez Enríquez
C. Eleuterio Hernández García
C. Estanislao Martínez Santiago
C. Abraham García Ramírez
C. Zacarías P. García López

The Loxichas sell these purses to raise money to be able to purchase necessities within the prison; to help sustain their families, many of whom have lost their primary breadwinner; and to coordinate with compañerxs on the outside who are fighting for their freedom, because phone calls cost money.
